AHO Guidance on COVID-19 infection prevention and control for primary care settings in Africa
Africa Health Organisation (AHO) has produced a Guidance and Technical Report on COVID-19 infection prevention and control for primary care, including general practitioner practices, dental clinics and pharmacy settings in Africa.

As of 21 June, there were 9,024,672 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world and 469,389 deaths. Despite these numbers, much is still misunderstood or unknown about the virus which has brought regions of the globe to a standstill and placed huge pressure on the global economy.

Despite growing concern that COVID-19 may have a devastating impact in regions with fragile healthcare systems, case numbers in Africa have not escalated at the same exponential rate seen in other parts of the world. As of June 14th, Africa have almost 170,000 confirmed cases, representing just 2% of the world’s total cases.

AHO has long recognised the role of gender in health, not only from a biological standpoint but also in terms of how social, cultural, economic and political gender disparities come to shape overall health outcomes. This is a highly relevant issue in the current climate of a global pandemic. Biologically, studies have shown that COVID-19 seem to affect women to a lesser degree; on average, men have a 60% higher fatality rate than women. However, a closer look at secondary long-term impacts paints a strikingly different picture.

World No Tobacco Day 2020: Protecting youth from industry and preventing them from tobacco and nicotine use. Ahead of World No Tobacco Day (31 May), the Africa Health Organisation is highlighting the damage of tobacco and related industry tactics: tobacco kills up to half its users. AHO is calling on countries and partners to empower youth to stand up to Big Tobacco by dispelling its lies and refusing to use its products.
