Background

The humanitarian context in Niger is characterized by a combination of factors: food insecurity, malnutrition, seasonal epidemics, flooding and population movements including displacement and migration. It is estimated that 1.9 million people, mainly women and children, will need humanitarian assistance in 2022, of which about 231 000 will need support from health partners.

Health sector situation

In the area of the country affected by the Lake Chad Basin crisis, health services, water and other essential services have been disrupted by insecurity and recurrent attacks.
In 2017, 340 000 people are expected to face food insecurity, around 12 000 children will be severely malnourished and almost 45 000 will suffer from moderate malnutrition.
The main objective of the Health Cluster during 2019 will be to reduce morbidity and mortality by improving access to health care and reducing the impact of population movements on the health of the displaced population.

Health sector objectives

  1. Improve access and quality of primary health care and referral care, especially reproductive health and HIV/AIDS for vulnerable populations
  2. Ensure the prevention, preparation and response to outbreaks of diseases with epidemic potential and other health emergencies
  3. Reinforce the capacity and coordination of health interventions at national and regional level
